DARPA and the U.S. Air Force successfully flew an F-16 fighter jet fully controlled by an artificial intelligence agent. The test, conducted at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, in July 2026, was a historic milestone: for the first time, an operational-standard USAF fighter was modified into an autonomous flying platform with infrastructure enabling rapid and scalable combat AI development.
What is the VENOM Program and How Does It Work?
The Viper Experimentation and Next-generation Operations Model (VENOM) program is a collaboration between the U.S. Air Force and DARPA, originating from the Air Combat Evolution (ACE) initiative. Previously, ACE demonstrated that AI agents could fly the experimental X-62A VISTA fighter in close-range air-to-air combat. Now, VENOM brings that capability to standard F-16s by installing the VENOM Autonomy Kit (VAK).
The VAK is a new interface kit that connects the aircraft's flight and mission control systems with the AI agent, without altering the F-16's core software. Pilots can switch between human and AI control with the flick of a switch, enabling human-on-the-loop experiments where the pilot remains in the cockpit to monitor and ready to take over at any time. This approach guarantees safety while providing an efficient path for iteratively refining combat AI.
Next Steps: From Single Tests to Multi-Aircraft Operations
This VENOM flight lays the foundation for DARPA's Artificial Intelligence Reinforcements (AIR) program. In the next phase, the VENOM fleet will be used to test multi-agent AI in live flight scenarios. The ultimate goal: enable human pilots to seamlessly lead teams of autonomous unmanned aircraft in long-range air combat.
Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Highland, the new AIR program manager, emphasized that this achievement opens the possibility of creating dominant autonomy for multi-aircraft operations. Meanwhile, Terry Wilson of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) stressed that the collaborative ecosystem among DARPA, industry partners, and the Eglin test team was key to success. The AIR program will continue to accelerate AI model development and expand testing to more complex operations, including the U.S. Air Force's Collaborative Combat Aircraft program.

The complexity of modern air combat, especially beyond visual range, demands extremely fast decision-making. AI is expected to help pilots manage the flood of information, but there are still major questions about the performance and trustworthiness of AI in the fog of real war.
"This breakthrough test flight with the VENOM-modified F-16 advances the infrastructure needed to develop trusted autonomous combat capability," said Brigadier General James Valpiani, a DARPA program manager.
The AIR program is designed to test combat agents in operationally relevant scenarios, answer those critical questions, and ultimately deliver capabilities that deter war and win battles.
